What are cookies?

A "cookie" is a text file sent by a server to a browser that enables the server to collect information from the browser and vice versa. A cookie will help the website to recognize your device whenever you visit the website subsequently. Cookies have many functions. For example, they can remind us of your username and your preferences, they can analyse the performance of our website or even enable us to recommend content that we think could be of interest to you. Every time you access the website, whether a cookie is present or not, we register the type of browser, the operating system and the host together with the URL source of the visitor as well as the information on the page requested. These data can then be used in aggregate form and anonymously for statistical calculations on the use of the website. There are various kinds of cookie with different features and functions and they can remain in the computer or mobile device of the user for different periods of time:
  • Navigation or session cookies, which are cancelled automatically when the browser is closed (they are used for authentication or to make a purchase etc.);
  • Persistent cookies that remain on the user’s computer until a set expiration date.
  • “Technical cookies”, i.e. those used only to transmit a notification on an electronic communication network, or to the extent that is strictly necessary to provide a service explicitly requested by the user.   They are, in other words, cookies that are essential for the functioning of the website or are necessary to carry out activities requested by the user. Based on current legislation in Italy, to use these cookies the express consent of the user is not always required. Technical cookies that do not require the express consent of the user also include “analytics cookies” if they are used directly by the manager of the website to collect information in an aggregate format regarding the number of users and how these users visit the website.
  • Functionality cookies, which enable the user to navigate according to a series of selected criteria (for example, language, products selected for purchase) in order to improve the service provided to the same user.
  • By contrast, profiling cookies, i.e. those aimed at creating a profile of the user for targeted advertising in line with the preferences shown by the same user in his or her internet browsing, require the prior consent of the user. No profiling cookies are present on the website CIR Compagnie Industriali Riunite S.p.A.  For further information on the use of personal information as per the terms of Art. 13 of D.Lgs. 196/2003.
