CIR was founded in 1976 by Carlo De Benedetti
, currently Honorary Chairman, who acquired a small tanning business (Concerie Industriali Riunite) and transformed it in a diversified industrial company.

In 2018 CIR group reported revenues of € 2,817.4 million, gross operating margin of € 306 million and net result of € 12.9 million. At the end of 2018 the group had 16,365 employees.
