Currently full professor (professore ordinario) of political economics at the Bocconi University, where he is the Chairman of the Innocenzo Gasparini Institute for Economic Research (IGIER) and Member of the Privatization Committee.

Previously full professor at Stanford University, U.C.L.A. (University of California at Los Angeles) and at the Universities of Cagliari and Brescia. Researcher for various international institutions and universities, such as the Federal Bank of the United States, the Institute of International Economic Studies of Stockholm, the Carnegie-Mellon University, Member of the Board of Economic Experts for the Prime Minister’s Office, Consultant for the International Monetary Fund.
